I made this short film as a solo project during my third year at MoPA. The story was about the rebellion of house appliances, so I made a little story about a radio player that kills itself because the music it plays makes their owner remember their late travelling partner.
Mahé and Henri, the two main characters, went through a lot of different design aspects while I was trying to figure out which artistic direction would fit both the story and the time constraints that I had to face. I settled on something that would look like little toys, as it then allowed me to simplify the animation process by making it look like stop motion.
The idea was also to make two versions of Mahé that would show that she became old : the texturing is a lot more rough when she is sad, there are scratches and she has lost a lot of her varnish.

I really enjoyed the research process for this short film, and the first versions of the character designs, despite being way too ambitious, were a lot of fun to draw and conceptualise. I wanted Mahé and Henri to look like they travelled and had adopted the way of dressing of foreign tribes mixed with a more european clothing style.
At the begining, I also wanted Mahé to look like a strong woman despite her grief, and I tried to convey that aspect of her regarless of her age.
